By gathering essential equipment and supplies before an emergency happens and keeping it all in an easy-to-find spot, you can alleviate unnecessary anxiety for you and your birds when facing the unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we will cover the following important emergency preparedness topics for bird owners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to create an emergency preparedness kit for your bird<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to create an emergency preparedness plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergency first aid training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key steps for success during an emergency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To Create An Emergency Preparedness Kit For Your Bird<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your bird\u2019s evacuation kit should include the essentials you\u2019ll need to safely relocate your bird for a temporary but potentially undetermined amount of time.\u00a0Keeping the following items on hand and stored in a central, easy-to-grab location will set you and your pets up for success in the face of an unplanned emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Having the below items available and easy to grab will make emergency situations less stressful. While you may be tempted to add in a lot of \u201cI might need this\u201d items, remember that it is important to keep your kit light and mobile. Try to keep it to absolute essentials (although you can make room for your bird\u2019s favorite toy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Include the following items in your bird\u2019s Emergency Preparedness Kit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Travel cage or carrier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your bird\u2019s food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bottled water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First aid kit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paperwork<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hand mister<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hot water bottle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cage cover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cage liners and cleaning supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A backpack or larger bag<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Carrier<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your bird\u2019s travel carrier stored near or under the cage.\u00a0This will prevent you from having to spend time locating it in the garage or basement when time is critical.\u00a0If you own multiple birds and carriers, label each with your bird\u2019s name, your contact information, and your vet\u2019s contact information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Bird&#8217;s Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your bird\u2019s emergency food in an airtight container and include at least a 7-day supply per bird.\u00a0Make sure you rotate this out often to make sure you don\u2019t have expired food when an emergency occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottled Water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep at least a 7-day supply of bottled water in your bird\u2019s emergency kit. Alternatively, you can utilize a bird-friendly water sterilization system such as a gravity filtration system you can find at camping stores.
